The Gospel
The Bible begins with the well-known words, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” The gospel also begins with God and finds its completion in God. It is God’s gospel and is specifically called the gospel of God many times in the bible. As the gospel is truly God’s gospel, any real understanding of the gospel must begin with a proper understanding of who God, the author of the gospel, is. “I the Lord am holy” (Lev. 20:26). The defining characteristic, the attribute of all of God’s attributes, is holiness. God is set apart, He is absolutely pure, without any blemish of any kind whatsoever.
His goodness is a holy goodness. His love is a holy love. His wrath is a holy wrath. This God, this holy God, created man in His own image innocent of any wrong doing and with a nature that was free of sin. Man was given charge of the care of the world into which he was placed and given only one limitation on what he was permitted to do. (Gen 2:16-17) The LORD God commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.” Sadly, man did eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and from that moment forward, sin and death began to reign in man’s body, soul, and spirit.
However, this sad turn of events did not take God by surprise. His remedy for man’s dilemma proceeded with the sending of His only begotten Son, Jesus. Jesus, son of man by Mary and Son of God via the agency of the Holy Spirit was uniquely qualified to both live the life that God requires of man, as well as to give His sinless life in payment for the sins of all who believe on Him. Jesus Himself said, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.” (Mark 1:15) Repentance, the repudiation of relying on self-merit to be acceptable to God, accompanied by belief in Savior for the forgiveness of sins is now all that is necessary for eternal life and reconciliation with God.
